New UCLA Extension Class: Nonprofit Organizations: Compliance and Governance

Designed for CPAs, attorney’s, Enrolled Agents, tax managers, controllers, directors, trustees, financial planners, and executive directors, this course presents tax-related compliance guidelines and key legal issues for nonprofit organizations.

Topics covered include:
● a step-by-step process for corporate formation and application for recognition of tax-exempt status
● the new streamlined application (Form 1023-EZ)
● unrelated business income
● commercial activities conducted through joint ventures and subsidiaries
● the prohibition on private inurement and private benefit.

Learn a systematic approach to evaluating compliance with federal tax requirements and state nonprofit laws, including the Nonprofit Integrity Act of 2004 and the Pension Protection Act of 2006, as well as understanding and troubleshooting the revised Form 990.

Tuesday, May 17, 2011 – Beverly Hills Bar Association Barristers Workshop – Form 1099 Reporting in Lawsuits and Settlements

This presentation explained how settlement payments are treated for federal income tax purposes and the effective use of allocations and in settlement agreements and other documents.  It introduced deductibility of amounts paid and exclusions from taxable income.  The issuance of 1099s to attorneys was explained, with examples to illustrate these rules.  See following link.

Friday, May 6, 2011 – Santa Clarita Discussion Group of the California Society of Certified Public Accountants – “Recent Developments – Nonprofit Organizations and Form 990 Update”

This presentation explained the federal tax reporting obligations of nonprofit organizations and the automatic loss of tax exemption rules.  It included the consequences of noncompliance with filing requirements with the California Secretary of State and with the California AG/Registry of Charitable Trusts.   It also included a discussion of the revised Form 990, including nonprofit governance and policies.
